Chang’e Not Pregnant, Says Chinatown Festival Light-up Spokesman

Poor Chang’e. She just can’t seem to catch a break, despite being an immortal moon fairy who possesses what is pretty much an iron rice bowl.

If you’re not familiar with the story of Chang’e, here’s a short summary. According to legend, she was the wife of archer Hou Yi and together, the couple lived in a time of intense global warming when there were 10 suns. To save the world from burning up, Hou Yi shot down 9 out of 10 suns. This netted him the elixir of immortality as a reward. Unfortunately, their house was broken into by Hou Yi’s greedy apprentice, when Chang’e was home alone. Instead of handing over the elixir, she drank it and ascended to the heavens, taking up residence in the moon. It is also said that Chang’e has with her a rabbit companion on the moon, though the origin of that story is less clear.

Now that decorations are in place for the Mooncake Festival in Chinatown, some members of the public are busy zeroing in on the moon fairy’s appearance. To be specific, they were concerned with Chang’e’s midsection, commenting that she seems… quite pregnant.

The hubbub necessitated a response by the spokesman of the Chinatown Festival Street Light-up Sub-committee, who explained when contacted by The Straits Times that Chang’e was merely sitting. The protrusion, therefore, was merely her lifted knees pushing against her robes.

Chang’e was not spared from the public’s intense scrutiny last year either. Some members of the public took issue with her face, in particular, saying that she looked overly masculine. This resulted in the craftsmen employed by the committee responsible for her working overnight to “fix” Chang’e.

What do you think about Chang’e’ look this year? Are you a fan of a more photorealistic approach or are in favour of this kawaii approach?
