Bag It: Create A Sustainable Beauty Regime With These Cosmetic & Beauty Products

You've seen labels of cosmetic and beauty products declaring themselves "vegan", "cruelty-free" and "natural and organic" - but it's not often we come across such products which are friendly to our oceans. In fact, beauty purchases tend to come with little plastic packets of samples which most of us don't even use. These packets end up being shoved into the dark corners of our cabinets, only to be thrown into the trash during the annual spring-cleaning.

It's appalling the amount of plastic waste which ends up in our once-clean-and-blue oceans, not to mention the empty bottles, plastic bags for our beauty hauls and used compact casings. They are non-recyclable and will lay seating in our landfills and oceans for at least 1000 years. Think about that for a minute!

According to some studies, a woman will spend an average of US$3,000 (S$418,050) on cosmetics alone - that's a whopping half a million on products and services that makes up only half of a beauty regime!

They say some will kill for beauty - and our ocean life is taking the hit. We don't need to join the green army or partake in social campaigning to become eco warriors - all you need to do is to switch up some products you use to make a true difference.

We've spotted these fabulously sustainable beauty and cosmetic brands to help you get on board a plastic-free and zero waste life.

You're probably used to shampoos dispensed from a bottle - but how about a shampoo bar? They come in minimal packaging but packs a strong punch against their bottled contenders. Aside from being travel-friendly, shampoo bars tend to be longer-lasting than liquid shampoos, and is said to bring hair back to its original, shiny and voluminous structure by stripping residue from traditional hair cleansers. You'll feel the difference immediately!

Biconi is a homegrown brand which touts products which are vegan-friendly, cruelty-free and Mother Nature-approved such as the Biconi Hair Revitalising Shampoo Bar ($59). Their shampoo bars and other stuff they sell are handmade in small batches. And if you have sensitive skin, you'll be glad to know that they only use hypoallergenic ingredients!

You've probably caught a whiff of the alluring scent wafting from an Aesop long before you spot them. They are known for their minimalist displays and entrance lined with full-sized sampling pump bottles which entice people to try out their products even before entering, hence the fragrance. To reduce their eco footprint, this brand has taken the step to use apothecary-style glass bottles instead of plastic - they are pretty and fully recyclable! Take the Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Facial Toner ($53) for example: Handy, minimalist and comes with raving reviews.

Hair Dye

Box hair dyes have somewhat got themselves a bad rep for being hard to achieve an even dye, but they are good for the odd touch-ups and cheap colouring. With salons closing every now and then due to the pandemic, we are starting to rely on box dyes more than ever. But did you know that the chemicals in hair dye - box or not - often end up in our waters? Even a low concentration of ammonia is toxic to aquatic life. Henna, on the other hand, is a natural hair dye which has the additional benefit of adding body and shine to hair. Lush's Rouge Henna Hair Colour ($39) gives a fiery burst of colour to your hair by developing differently depending on the individual tones unique to your hair, creating your own personal shade.
