Labour Day, a.k.a May Day has always been a day for a big family day-out or a time to catch up with friends over coffee or beer. This year’s Labour Day will be a little different from the previous years, but it doesn’t mean it should stop you from celebrating!
In Singapore, it seems like another holiday that we look forward to since April but Labour Day, or May Day, is more than just that. It is a day where we honour our workers and their contributions to the country. In the past, rallies and resolutions were also seen as a part of Labour Day celebrations where organised workers express their solitude and unity together.
Buy a cake to celebrate with your family
We are not gonna judge even if it’s just an excuse to eat some cake during this period. After all, Labour Day is kind of a celebration for you too! You worked hard to take that slice of cake that you’ve desired for a long time. Especially if you are a parent, we know that taking care your children is also kind of a job, so there’s no better time to reward yourself than enjoying the weekend with cakes and more cakes!
There are several local bakeries taking online orders for this weekend, such as Sweedy Patisserie, Common Chefs Bistro, Cat and the Fiddle, and so on. You are supporting them and satisfying your cravings. Win-win!

Bake a cake with the little ones at home
It’s a public holiday, work-from-home or not. Take this day to recharge your energy and try not to reply to any work-related emails. You deserve this day to rest and spend quality time with your family.
There are many home activities that you can do with your kids that you may not have the luxury of time during workdays. Playing board games is one way to bond as a family, but if all things fail – bake! Children love baking, or shall we say, playing with flour. Baking cookies, making pancakes or if you are up for a challenge, bake a rainbow cake together! Let them have a go at mixing flour with egg or milk, and of course, rolling of the dough. It doesn’t matter if it turns out beautiful or something not what you expected, be proud of the masterpiece your family created together and enjoy the fruits of your labours with generous amount of chocolate!
Before you get started, let them create their very own chef hats to wear while they are in the kitchen! Here’s an easy step-by-step tutorial video to learn from:
